TERRENCE

I breathe into the mellow evening of a day I deeply needed. The honey berry bars, left to rest in their trays overnight, have been measured and fussed over and tucked away. Neena has returned to the den, but the feel of her in my arms remains. The sounds of camp are quiet, respecting the work of the team that records a new audiobook over by the gnarled tree. Glow is reading. She wasn’t happy about that, but Reilly chose a book with a main character who lives underground in a system of tunnels and pipes, and Glow’s husky voice resonates in ways that bring the subterranean story to life.

Or that’s what the marketing blurb will say, anyhow. I don’t suppose Katrina has shown it to Glow, yet.

I smile ruefully. Katrina has spent the last few months using her talents for graphic design and her honest delight in every one of her packmates to turn the audiobooks we began recording for Moon Girl’s baby pack and some of our lone wolves on the far reaches into a proper business. One that belongs to those of us on the periphery of this pack.

Blaze monitors the equipment Sierra showed her how to supervise, and Elijah’s wolf listens with his back to Glow and special headphones on his ears. The moments when his tail thumps or his tongue hangs out in silent laughter delight the recording crew.

Moon Girl and Xander hum a companionable duet by the fire. Humans record their audiobooks in absolute silence. Shifters find such absence of background noise eerie. Ours sound right, or so say the customers happily signing up for the new subscription service, at least.

Katrina has promised them two new books a month.

I’ve been volunteered to read in September. A book of poetry, written by a human who is purported to have spent much time in the wilderness.

I believe Katrina is marketing it as comedy.

I look up as howls sound off in the distance. An early evening run for those who wanted to be in their fur, but an undemanding one. Nothing to push too hard on those of us who can only manage human shapes, tonight. That will come soon enough. The mating ceremony reaches for my wolf already.

I don’t know if he will be able to answer.

Evan looks up from where he sits knitting with Molly and Adelina and Teesha. He brought us flatbread that smelled of Grady’s hands for dinner and sat down after to contribute his skills with pointy needles. They work on one of the projects that happen only in the shadows, away from the eyes of the den.

When he makes a mistake, Molly pokes Evan with one of her needles.

I watch as he finally pokes her back.

Teesha’s eyes glint with satisfaction.

Someone has completed their homework. I wonder if it was Molly or Evan.

A guest I wasn’t expecting this evening crouches down beside me and sets a hand on my teapot. “May I join you?”

I study the competent fingers of my alpha’s sister.
